SAKE A SPORTING HERO IN Ol EXILED Scouser Gerry Smith revealed a trans-global sporting connection when he returned home from Australia for his mother's 90th birthday. Gerry, of Geelong, near Melbourne, brought with him some action photos of his local sporting hero an Australian rules footballer with a familiar name. For the star of the rough and tumble game Down Under was Gary Ablett, whose namesake is one of the home-grown Anfield soccer aces here on Merseyside. By Vic Nato Gerry, 57, said: "It's an incredible coincidence that our two cities share a common sporting bond in Gary Ablett. I suppose it must be unique.

"The Gary Ablett from Geelong epitomises the Australian sportsman and is recognised as one of the game's all-time greats. His team was beaten in the grand final last season." Gerry, who recently stepped down as chairman of the Geelong soccer club, has lived in Australia for 20 years. Now retired, he was born in Kirkdale and emigrated to Victoria after travelling as a captain at sea. He added: "I always love coming back to Liverpool. Your home is where your heart is." Ann Smith, the Liverpool football fan's mother, lives in Darmond's Green, West Kirby.
